Um, I hate to break it to you. But in most states possession of any item and especially a vehicle/boat part with an 'altered or removed id mark' is a felony. That's just possession. And the standard is 'knew or should have known'. If you bought the boat from a dealer used or new, they should be able to contact Yamaha and possibly get a replacement sticker. If you bought it from 'some guy', you may well have stolen property and be committing a felony. I would bet money if you are ever stopped by any LEO, you will not be happy. They will impound your boat and may well arrest you. The boat impound is a sure thing though. You need to address this before that happens. I may be wrong, but doesn't the Yamaha software read the serial number from the ECU in the motor? If so dealer/tech should be able to verify it even if you bought it from 'some guy'. There must be some relief from prosecution if the damn manufacture can't produce a half way permanent vin number.Exactly. Yamaha does a very poor job of affixing a serial number to the engine. Several of my old Yamaha motors did not have the serial number visible or the tag simply fell off. To assert that such a situation is a felony is silly. Additionally, I've never seen or heard of a game warden looking for a SN. Yamaha may even maintain a database of motors reported as stolen. I was disappointed to learn that Apple does not do so, after the theft of an iPad from a locked vehicle and hidden from view. Apple was of almost no help to law enforcement, either. If there is indeed a more permanent VIN stamped into the block, or, if the ECU contains it (if original ECU), you could make inquiries, or an authorized dealer may enter the number into Yamaha's database simply to determine service history.probably a more likely way of being found in possession of stolen property than a law enforcement stop while on the water. The FBI NCIC maintains a database of stolen vehicles by VIN, but am not sure if they also track boats and motors. When I was still a criminal investigator, I got monthly reports from state police of boats reported stolen in NYS.many of the boats on the list had been stolen over a decade ago and were still on the list. About 95% were trailerables. I have found (and, in some cases purchased) stuff on Craigslist priced at about 40% of retail, despite being brand new. A Stihl chainsaw and several very expensive Pelican cases. I documented everything, determined the sellers worked in the distribution chain of each company, and this was obviously 'diverted' stock.I made official contact with the companies, and neither had an interest in pursuing an investigation or prosecution, nor maintained a database of stolen stock, unless it was something major, like a tractor trailer filled with product being stolen. They had no interest in employee 'shrinkage'. Some of you guys are really streching it with the felony thing, while we dont know if its a late model f300 which would be suspect of being stolen, its most likely a 15 year old motor which has been painted, and does not have much value at all, I can tell you from personal experience in fl, I went to buy a boat off craigslist which was a to good to be true deal, when I arrived at the house and looked the boat over I found the vin# had been ground off of the transom with a grinder, just for them wasting my time I called the leo, the officer that came out did nothing! The people said they bought it like that and that was it end of story.
